The Fool: symbolism

A young man, with his little bundle of baggage as luggage, sets out for a trip… With a smile on his lips, he looks at the Sun. The weather is fine, he has complete confidence in Destiny which will take his steps towards… the unknown!

A small dog, symbol of Friendship, accompanies him… or tries to warn him. In his elation, The Fool does not realize that he is so close to emptiness. Will he notice it in time?

The Fool: general description

The Fool is considered to be either the first or the last Card in the Major Arcana. The fool cars is not numbered at all. In the “Rider-Waite” tradition, the Card is numbered 0 (zero).

The Fool is both the “departure” and “arrival” card of the Major Arcana cycle. Indeed, if we conceive of the Major Arcana as an initiatory journey of self-discovery – with the different Major Arcana as stages of this journey – we start from ourselves to come back … to ourselves, with a better understanding of ourselves, of the others and the world.

The Fool is therefore an adventurer, a pioneer, who sets out on a new adventure with enthusiasm and the hope that his quest will be fruitful. He hasn’t taken much with him – a small backpack – and he doesn’t seem to really know where his steps are going to take him.

The fool card emanates exhilarating Energy. A new beginning is looming, are you ready to take the plunge? What is holding you back? Optimism is essential, going for it is allowed! A certain confidence in the future radiates this card.

The flip side of this enthusiasm is the immaturity That the Fool can display, his inclination to “form ideas”, his lack of preparation and his inability to see the danger. The Fool can turn out to be a “daredevil”, a “risk-taker” who does not think before acting and who then suffers the consequences of his actions.

The Fool (Upright) Meaning

The Fool card is indicative that you could be about to embark upon something totally new. This could take the form of a journey that was not planned. This journey does not necessarily mean that you are going somewhere; it could be a journey of the mind.

Either way you are going to be starting a new cycle and this is a really exciting time for you.

You will be filled with renewed energy and you will have a sense of optimism and spontaneity. Any journey of self discovery that you may take will be filled with optimism and enjoyment.

There may be some uncertainties arising in your life but this will bring forth many opportunities that could lead to bigger and better things.

Old ways have now been cast aside and the familiar replaced with the unfamiliar. You may also find that you will have many decisions to make along the way. An interesting path lies ahead for you, but you must trust your judgment along the way.

The Fool card reversed is a card that advises against any unnecessary risks and warns against carelessness at this time. Now is not the time to be taking any ill advised risks or making any hasty decisions.

It is a good time however to channel your energy much more positively and creatively and to stop any time wasting.

There may be someone around you who is having difficulty in acting on their intuition and in some respects may even be trying to shirk their responsibilities.

If this person is a work colleague then they may be the type of person to do the minimum required which sometimes may be problematic. If you are considering any serious commitments then this card suggests that you should weight up everything very carefully before jumping in.
