In Sanskrit language Ajna  (आज्ञा)  means “beyond wisdom “, ” perceive “, ” command “.. Ajna chakra is the sixth chakra and is also called the third eye chakra.

This denomination derives from the fact that it is located in the center of the forehead, exactly between the eyebrows and is  the  symbol of intuition  and sight beyond appearances and even beyond reality itself.

It is inevitably connected to the eyes but also to the forehead, temples, brain and spinal cord. In this chakra all opposites and all dualities are connected  , such as masculine and feminine, reason and intuition, form and substance, body and mind, good and bad.

And the third eye sees what exists beyond these concepts,  dissolving the dualities to get to see the true reality.

This position allows him to control the organs that are found in that part of our body such as the eyes, the nervous system, the hormonal system and the pituitary gland.

And it is precisely from here that our inner guru resides, from where the ideas, fears and intuitions of each of us come from. And on these the chakra has a very strong impact if balanced in the right way

Third Eye Chakra Meaning

The third eye chakra transcends time and space.

Its physical location is in the brain, on the forehead , above the base of the nose, in the space between the eyebrows.

The gift of this chakra is to see , both the internal and external world . Its energy allows us to experience clear thoughts and gives us realizations through spiritual contemplation and self-reflection.
Through the gift of sight we can internalize the external world and, with a symbolic language, we can externalize the internal world.

Ajna energy allows us to access our inner guidance which comes from the depths of our being. It allows us to tear the veil of illusion and access deeper truths , being able to see beyond the mind and words.

The “third eye way” is to see everything as it is from the point of view of a “witness” or “observer”, simply being aware moment by moment.
It means examining and revising self-limiting ideas, developing a wisdom that comes from a perspective that transcends the duality of good or bad, black or white. It means seeing and helping others to see the deeper meanings of situations in their lives.

The nature of the sixth chakra is holistic . When this is fully activated, both hemispheres of the brain function in synchrony . The creativity and synthetic thinking of the right hemisphere are integrated and balanced with the logical and analytical thinking of the left hemisphere.

The Third Eye is not only the seat of wisdom , but also of consciousness . This is where you not only see what is happening, but also understand its meaning. This is where your sense of justice and ethics originate .

When your third eye is open, you not only see but also understand.

Another way in which a well-open ajna is referred to is the “sixth sense”.

As you know, we experience the world through the five senses. Even before you were born, in the womb , you heard noises such as your mother’s voice and heartbeat , and heard muffled sounds outside. You have experienced touch, taste and even perceived light. And, from the moment of birth, you have attributed your experiences to what you perceive through the senses. You have learned to trust your senses in what you can taste, smell, touch, see and hear . While sense perception is great in life experience, it limits you when it comes to expanding your spiritual awareness.

At one time , we could only rely on our sense of intuition and inner knowledge . Before modern technology, we had to rely on environmental cues and a more primal instinct to guide us. Just as birds can sense when a tsunami is coming, or squirrels know when it’s time to gather food for the winter, we humans also have an intuitive sense. We have simply lost touch with it and with our ability to trust it.

Your physical senses can give you valuable clues on how to follow your intuition. For example, have you ever had the feeling that a milk carton was bad? You smell it, you look at the expiration date and you see that there are still a couple of weeks left. Even ask everyone in the house: “Is this milk bad?” So, not detecting anything concrete, you go ahead and drink it, but you experience severe pain in your stomach. This is because, on a very subtle level, your sense of smell detected something wrong and gave you a signal that you doubted.

Here’s another example: You’re making a business deal with someone and everything seems to be going well. The person seems fantastic and honest. But, when you shake his hand, you feel that something is wrong. When the deal is successful, then, you discover that the person was corrupt.

We receive these clues through our senses, but when something is not visible we tend to ignore it . The good news is that you can learn to trust these clues and make better decisions based on your sense of intuition.

When your decisions go well, write them down to strengthen your confidence in intuition. Remember that, just like the animals of the forest, you too have always had this sixth sense; you simply have to find it.

There is no known developmental age associated with this chakra and it the third eye could be activated at any time in our lives. However, in order to integrate the knowledge available to us through this energy centre and turn it into wisdom, we need to make sure that all the lower chakras are balanced and harmoniously aligned.

Third Eye Chakra Activation

Sound has the power to open/activate the third eye chakra. Chanting the ‘eeee’ in the key of A or chanting OM repeatedly can achieve this. The third eye can also be activated spontaneously while listening to classical music with the eyes closed. You will know this has happened if you start seeing light and colours.

Crystals can also be used to activate the third eye. Choose any of the crystals mentioned above or a clear quartz piece and lie down with the crystal over your third eye. My personal favourite is lapis lazuli.

Why Anja Chakra is important

Keeping the Ajna chakra  well balanced brings numerous benefits to concentration, intuition and imagination.

The favorable impact of this chakra allows us to be more aware of what is happening around us and at the same time helps us to recognize ourselves, removing temptations or momentary desires from our spirit.

We do not allow ourselves to be influenced and this allows us to make decisions or put into practice ideas only and only ours, because our minds are free and watered with positive energy.

If the flow of energy that crosses this chakra is not blocked, in fact,  we get in tune with our higher self . We become intuitive, aware, focused and highly perceptive. We are able to visualize thoughts and images, empathy is amplified and we can understand what other people think.

We see the world for what it is , in its energy and in its spirituality, with wisdom and without prejudice. We are able to understand the essence of what surrounds us, seeing beyond what we physically look at with our eyes.

When  the Ajna  is blocked, we become selfish, cynical, materialistic, cold and calculating. We only trust what we see with our eyes and we can no longer perceive what exists beyond.

We can no longer dream or plan our future,  we become numb and detached , without the ability to stay focused on something for a long time. Optimism and dreams turn into chronic pessimism and it can even go as far as to stop dreaming.

On a physical level it will be the head that will be affected: headache, migraine, fatigue, insomnia, neurosis, eye pain and even blindness.

But  the sixth chakra can also be too open  and in this case in addition to the physical pains we become manic, self-celebrating and we tend to blame others for our sins too.

It is therefore important that the sixth chakra is always balanced to maintain inner serenity and a stable relationship with others.

How to Recognize Imbalances in the Sixth Chakra

If you would like to better understand the state of your third eye , you can take a cue from the following.

The best known physical symptoms of an imbalance, or blockage, in the sixth chakra are:

  • Problems view
  • Headache
  • Migraine
  • Stun

Some mental signs of a sixth chakra not having enough energy , however, are:

  • Sense of indecision
  • Feeling confused
  • Failing to set goals
  • States of denial
  • Poor memory
  • Difficulty seeing the future
  • Lack of imagination

Your sixth chakra, on the other hand, could be hyperactive if:

  • You are obsessed with psychic visions
  • You often have nightmares
  • You suffer from paranoia and hallucinations
  • You tend to get lost
  • You can’t concentrate

How to rebalance the Ajna Chakra

But what to do if Anja Chakra is closed or on the contrary, too open?

To  rebalance the third eye chakra , meditation is very important. Through meditation we can in fact put ourselves in communication with ourselves and with the energy that is around us. Even the practice of yoga undoubtedly brings you closer to this goal.

It is also important to practice  pranayama  to learn how to benefit from our breathing. To open the sixth chakra we can do it by listening to the mantra of the sixth chakra, the om .

In addition to yoga and meditation, to rebalance the sixth chakra you can carry out  activities that stimulate creativity  or immerse yourself in nature, paying attention to the small details of life and contemplating the beauties that are around us every day, such as a sunset or a starry sky.

Details that make our existence so beautiful, profound and worth living.

Third Eye Chakra Affirmation

A good method to restore balance in the chakras is that of affirmations . These are simple tricks to reprogram your mind , and consequently also your body, in a more positive and useful way for evolution. You can recite them whenever you want, and they are even more effective when an incense helps us get into the most appropriate state of mind.

Here is a series of statements designed specifically for the sixth chakra:

  • I live my life guided by my intuition.
  • I am in touch with my inner guide.
  • I listen to my deepest wisdom .
  • I try to understand and learn from my life experiences.
  • I am wise, intuitive and connected with my inner guidance.
  • I feed my spirit.
  • I listen to the wisdom of the elders .
  • I trust my intuition .
  • I lose the past and learn from it.
  • I forgive myself.
  • I love and accept myself.
  • I am connected with the wisdom of the universe.
  • I am open to inspiration and happiness .
  • My life unfolds effortlessly.
  • I am at peace .
  • They are a source of truth and love.
  • I am a spiritual being living a human experience.
  • My imagination is open to all possibilities “
  • I know that everything is as it should go.
  • I imagine a world of love, peace and beauty.
  • I honor my intuition.
  • I see all things clearly .
  • I welcome my inner knowledge to awaken my psychic potential.

Meditation for the Third Eye

There are many types of meditation , but all of them help us develop a clearer and more intuitive vision.

Here is a meditation that is particularly suitable for bringing energy to your pineal gland , or third eye.

Remember that, to meditate, you need to find a comfortable position , and that you can get on an open yoga mat by sitting on a folded blanket or, better yet, a meditation cushion .

  • Find a quiet , quiet space that is safe from all types of phones if possible.
  • Sit down as comfortably as possible.
  • Rub your hands vigorously until you feel a heat build up between them.
  • Close your eyes and cover them with your palms . Immerse them in complete darkness.
  • Calmly, take several slow, steady breaths ; let your hands drop and rest in your lap.
  • Visualize a ball of indigo light whirling around the center of your forehead. In this ball is everything you’ve ever seen. Everything you’ve seen, read, everything you’ve witnessed is here.
  • Let an image of yourself arise in your mind. See yourself as you truly are, as a pulsating, vibrant piece of pure potential. See the cosmos in your eyes, the stardust on your skin, the rhythms of nature in the beating of your heart
  • Observe the beauty in you.
  • When your mind tries to show you your flaws , your failures and shortcomings (and it will), lead back from that place to only contemplate your light, your innate goodness, your spirit.
  • Teach yourself to see your light the same way you teach yourself a yoga posture . Remember that concentration and practice are very important. What you think of yourself, you become. So practice maintaining a vision of love.
  • Watching the news and reading your friends’ feeds, take a break. Be aware of what you are reading and watching , which you energize.
  • Try to grasp the beauty inherent in everything.

In Conclusion

We have seen together all the main characteristics of this chakra, its benefits and above all the exercises that must be performed to balance it in the right way. As you may have noticed, none of these are complicated, quite the opposite.

Even if it is the first time that you enter the world of Yoga do not have any fear, choose the one that you think is the simplest exercise and start immediately.

The goal is to transform meditation into a real lifestyle, not to continue to consider it only as a daily habit.
